While most people ranging anywhere from generation x, millennials, and even generation z, are faced with every day problems such as providing for their family, finding an apartment, or even just trying to get through high school, there is one grave problem we all face - climate change.
As time's progressed, carbon emissions have only increased. With the creation of appliances that run on fossil fuels, our emission rate has progressively increased, only causing harm to our planet. Big corporations are the main contributors to our enormous carbon footprint. ABC News quoted a report written by a non-profit organization called Carbon Disclosure Project, which stated "Just 100 companies worldwide are responsible for 71% of the world's industrial greenhouse gas emissions since 1988" (Jacobo). By allowing this type of behavior, we're hurting our planet in the process. Hurting the place we call home.
Minimizing our carbon footprint and reversing the damage we've caused is urgent now more than ever. There is still time to take actions before the result of climate change kicks in and becomes permanent. Taking baby steps such as reducing our meat consumption, switching to an electric car versus a gas-run cars, and recycling is helpful, but we need to make more powerful decisions to avoid this complication. In order to make major changes, we as a community need to elect someone whose intentions are to help save the earth, into office.
By electing someone whose intentions are good and want to put the health of our planet first, we can make the bigger changes needed in order to help save our Earth. By incorporating small changes into your everyday life, such as reducing our use in single-use plastic, we can prevent future consequences such as severe heat waves we will be faced with in the long run. We need to make powerful and impactful decisions before it is too late, the time is now.
With the upcoming election taking place in 2020, one way to help make an impact is by educating the community on our situation is critical. How can I make a difference if I can't vote, you might ask? If you're too young to participate, there are still ways you can make a difference. Even the smallest things help! You can ride your bike or use public transportation rather than using a vehicle to make an unnecessary trip, you can buy a bamboo toothbrush instead of a plastic one! You can make an impact just by being consciously aware of the decisions you make every day.
Climate change is an urgent crisis that we must take action against now. Change needs to happen before it is too late and the effects of climate change become irreversible! Earth is home to millions of families with children who will have to live with the consequences of our inability to prevent climate change. We must deal with this now so the future generation can live comfortably. Time is running out and before we know, it' it will be too late.

Talia, good overview of the issues. You mention the upcoming election; are there candidates you would suggest that are more focused on climate issues?
ReplyDeleteI found your blog super intriguing and making me want to learn more! What are things people can change that will help change the problem big corporations are making? When does the change need to happen by?
ReplyDeleteHi Zelda! There are ways you can help make some sort of impact even if you're not directly taking action. You can do all sorts of things ranging from something big like attending strikes against big corporations, or even raising awareness to the problem can make the smallest difference. I'm not exactly sure when change needs to be taken before the effects are irreversible, but there are tons of estimates from researchers you can find online.

ReplyDeleteYou state that "big corporations" contribute the most to the CO2 emissions, do you have specific examples of which corporations produce the most CO2?
I really like this post. It has many different ways that you can help with this big issue. I like how you included ways the younger generation that can't vote yet can help. Everyone has a chance to make a change.
ReplyDeleteHi Stella! Thank you for your feedback, I appreciate it.
DeleteThis post is cool! It really shows how we need to change and be more cautious about the things we put in our atmosphere. Do you think that there are any candidates in specific that can impact our environment in a positive way?
ReplyDeleteClimate change is an important issue that we need to focus on. What are some ways we could get involved politically to encourage change?
